Jack of All Trades Turns 70

The more things change...

First things first, since it's the title of the blog entry and all that: Finally reached my goal of "all skills 70+" when I hit 70 in Ranging.

You advanced to level 70 of ranging!

Ranging 70

Next up: All skills 75+ ... Ya know, that goal seems kinda never-ending ;)

Soloing Invaders

More levels later. Had some non-leveling goings on. Like, oh, this happened:

Invasion leftover, I managed to range it until it got onto the 45 a/d limit PK wall in Zirakinbar, and solo'd a blue dragon.

Was soloing Naspas without the aid of an a/d limit. Not the easiest task but I took on quite a few.

And while I can't take on an icy by myself with a sword, I certainly can pin him, at Ida storage no less, and arrow his ass to death. ;-)

Ranging Ice Dragon Pinned

So yes, it was a rare time when I actually participated in an invasion.

Invance... Me?

And an invance. My first in at least 6 months, if not longer.

120+ Invance

120+ Invance

That last pic has some nice experience in it, but not due to the invance. It was an Engineering Day, and I'd spent a couple hours before that in the Eng School.

I half-fight, half-range those. Fight all the stuff up to giants, range when there's nothing left I can fight.

Buried Treasure

Also did another treasure hunt, found my second treasure:

Treasure

Used F9 to mark where I'd checked for bags, thus the fires behind me ;-)

Speaking of finding stuff... this happened:

Pear and 4 Jokers

A pear and 4 Jokers in a row. That's a helluva poker hand.

Pear finds are up to 676, so 61 finds since my last update.

Redeemer Perk

A fourth redeemer perk was added, and I got it the same day. So I have all four.

Lucky Attacker Perk

And the Phoenix Flies

The mostly-forgotten Phoenix shapeshifting option still exists. Gotta admit, I have no clue when I'd ever actually use it. But since I'm an all-rounder, and it's something to level, I do on occasion "Phoenix out" and work on that level. Think 14 is the highest, and I've moved it up to level 9.

Oh Right, I Leveled Some Stuff, Too

Harvesting levels continue to come despite my not trying. Just the usual dailies, and harving whatever I happen to need.

You advanced to level 121 of harvesting!

Harvesting 121

Attack and Defense are still pretty much the same... dailies, though I do go out occasionally and continue to work on attempting to break stuff. This happened cashing in a daily:

You advanced to level 138 of attack!

Attack 138

I haven't done as much as I'd hoped working with my three God skills, but I did manage one level in one of them at least.

You advanced to level 88 of crafting!

Crafting 88

Engineering levels are still happening, getting power-leveled on Eng Days whenever I have the ings to poof treasure finders in the school.

I haven't done as much as I'd hoped working with my three God skills, but I did manage one level in one of them at least.

You advanced to level 114 of engineering!

Engineering 114

And last but definitely not least... while attempting to break some stuff (on creatures that happen to give "okay" a/d experience):

Your overall level is now 169!

Overall 169

That's all, folks! (And yeah, I got plans for more guild map visit entries, just haven't had time to put them together.)

Summoning My Inner Crafter, Among Other Things

Besides hitting my Alchemy goal of level 140, been quite busy with other stuff.
Did a brief run of more pear hunting recently, just for a change of pace. Found every pear during that period that I hunted for with the exception of one that was determined to be unreachable. Brought my total pears found count up to 522.

All 3 Redeemer Perks

With finally getting the No Hope perk, I now have all three of the perks currently offered by Redeemer.

No Hope Perk from Redeemer

Changing of the Gods

As mentioned in a previous post, after reaching Manu 100 I switched to the Summon God, killing the Defense god in the process as well.

Since then, I replaced Defense with Potion Goddess.

After reaching my Alchemy goal, I switched that to the Crafting God.

So the final result, where I had Alchemy-Manu-Defense before, I now have: Crafting, Potion, Summoning

This is going to make for a big change to how I used to play...

Starting the Summoning God

Summoning has been the heaviest worked on lately. While Tiger Stones are of course the best option for higher-level leveling, Furs are scarce unless you go collect them yourself.

I've bought what I could find, and I've even hit the triple spawn in NRM at times to collect. But I've realized that the best thing I could do is work on some Spider Stones as well.

Why? They require thread, which is easily stocked buying from the NPC in EVTR.

So my current plan is to continue work on stocking up White Tiger Furs, but save them for Summon Days. Mix Spider Stones on non-summon days in the meantime, both to keep gc flowing and so I'm not limiting my leveling to just that special day.

The combo of spider and tiger stones seems to be working so far.

Since taking the Summon god, I've made another 5 summon levels. That included mixing what tiger furs I had on a summon day along with mixing spider stones at the gypsum on normal days.

You advanced to level 62-66 of summoning!

Summoning 66

While mixing the tiger stones before that...

Your overall level is now 167!

Overall 167

Starting Up the Crafting God

The Potion Goddess has yet to provide a level, mainly because I've not mixed much and it's still new. I have mixed quite a few SRs, as well as the MoPs needed for the Potion Goddess quest, and about 520 creature food for my personal use. Still not enough to level, though.

Crafting on the other hand is off to a start, gaining 2 levels from a combo of mixing rings for personal use (I eat them like candy), and tossing out pol sap ings in the school on school days. That's led to 2 levels so far, and a third is close.

You advanced to level 73-74 of crafting!

Crafting 74

Currently stocking for a full school days' worth of polished saps. After which, I should be able to switch to blank paper for much better experience. Testing at current levels, I deemed it not worth it to try yet, but close.

All Those Other Skills

While my current plans consist primarily of working on summoning and crafting, other skills do not remain ignored.

Ranging 68 - On a recent ranging day, I got level 68 and am very close to 69. (No screenie available.)

Engineering - Any amber I stock up continues to be used in the school to level this skill. I don't take advantage of the full 6 hours for this reason of an Engineering day, but when those days appear I'll use up whatever supplies I have.

On the last Engineering day, that led to 3 levels.

You advanced to level 108-110 of engineering!

Engineering 110

Defense - I continue to do dailies for a/d, but haven't focused on any training of late. I did take advantage of a Sun Tzu since I was close to leveling defense at the time.

You advanced to level 136 of defense!

Defense 136

Harvesting - Hasn't been focused on since level 100, just whenever I happen to level it. Got surprised by this level since I wasn't paying attention to it.

You advanced to level 119 of harvesting!

Harvesting 119

That's All Folks...

Current plans:
1- Continue mixing summon stones
2- Stock pol sap ings for a school day
3- Stock TF ings for engineering that are enough to mix the amber I have
4- Heavy stocking/mixing of LEs and SRs for summoning

And when I'm bored and my astro is red, go out and continue trying to break stuff I need to break for quests.
For the first weapon break quest, I only have Dragon Blade left.
For the "newbie" armor break, I have leather torso and helm left.
For the first normal armor break quest, only the tit helm remains.

Close but no cigar for all 3 of those.

Pears and Gods and OAs and Alchemies and Other Goodies

Yeah, I am trolling...

'Tis been some good levels since last update. Alchemy is still on a roll, OA of course moving up, and more... and a decision on the gods causing a plan change.

But first...

The Pears Continue

Pear finds are now up to 463. Still over 60% found when hunted which allows them to remain at a profitable level. There's of course been periods where my name showed up a lot as finding it, and others not so much. (That has more to do with real-life than anything else... during times I'm not finding many I'm spending a lot more time out of the game, thus not hunting. Add to that the under-40% of times I just don't find it.)
I've been asked two things regularly. Granted, I've grown very tired of pear talk and I don't respond to PMs about it anymore. But since these two things come up frequently, I'll mention them here.

And BTW, if you are hunting or trying hunting, don't expect me to be chatting with you. I ignore all chat during hunts. I'm focused, and as well with some health issues that affect my hands, I can't chat and be running around trying to hunt at the same time.

Besides that, you're the competition. Just because I wrote the ultimate guide to pear hunting doesn't mean I'm going to help you in any way mid-hunt.

(I'm also not going to chat about "where it was" or "is it harvestable?" or such once I'm done... I've been doing this a very long time. It may be new to you, but I grew weary of that a very long time ago and won't respond. I'm on to doing other things or going afk the second I finish hunting.)

1. Are they profitable?

What's a profitable level for pears? I did the calculations during my first few hundred hunts, both when they were found and not found. It's very important to include all the time and finders and essences and hax food used when you don't find it in your calculations to determine the average per found pear.

Profitable: When it can be sold for more than the cost of the pear finders used on all hunts, whether found or not, as well as covers the value of the time wasted, both when found and not.

That of course is when you hunt solo. Keep track of the time you use on every hunt as well as all finders used (whether you find the pear or not). Average those out. Requires a good 50-60 hunts to get a good average. Determine the current pear sale price. If a team, split that price equally.

Now... having done that, calculate the total time you spent hunting, and the cost of the finders and other things needed while hunting. Determine how much iron ore you could have harved and sold in that time. Is the value of that equal to or better than the profit you get from selling pears, after finder cost, essences, food if haxed, and so on?

As a team you have to split the profit... at its current value, definitely not worth it in the long run. Maybe back when they sold for 70kgc as they did when I first started hunting, but I've since forced the price down via my bot to 45kgc. Which is still profitable. For a solo hunter. I dunno what the price would need to be for two or more as a team, since I never considered the team option.

That's why I always fly solo. (And well, giggle a little when teams occasionally appear, as they have done a few times. They drop out pretty quick when they realize it's not profitable to continue. Larger the team, the worse it gets for them.)

The basic gist is: Including time/finders used when you didn't find it, is the pear value more than what you would have made in the same time doing your most profitable thing? Or just harving iron ore or gypsum to sell if you don't know what to compare to.

Oh right, and definitely not worth it if you don't have your own ability to use the pears, or people you have a working relationship with to sell pears to. There's very few people in the game who can use these, and less who actually do. Those who do tend to already have their sources, like me. Selling to just random people at this point simply doesn't work, unless and until a new use for them is added.

I'd have quit hunting long ago if it weren't for my own occasional use, as well as "working relationships" to sell to.

2. Can I team up with you?

Generally asked by newbie hunters who don't really know what they're doing, usually after doing a couple unsuccessful attempts...

Absolutely not. First off, I've been guildless the overwhelming majority of my time playing for a reason: I don't have to depend on others or have them depend on me. Thus I can do things at my own pace, and always be doing what I want, not what needs to be done for the guild or such. I answer to noone but myself.

I won't team up with anyone to pear hunt for several reasons.

1) Basically the same as why I'm guildless. I enjoy finding it on my own. And with my current patterns and such, another person would just end up in my way. With 463 finds as of this post, I think I'm doing just fine without help.

2) As I explained above, it's difficult if not impossible for pear hunts to be profitable as a team. Every team that tries eventually gives up because of that. It's costly in both time and gc. With other competition, unreachable pear days, and so on, keeping the hunt at a pace that doesn't make you lose money is difficult even by yourself.

3) I have spent a massive amount of time learning the maps, inside and out, in very thorough detail. I know that the chances of me missing a harvestable on a map are damn near zero. I can't be assured a "teammate" has done the same and won't end up missing a lot. Especially when those wanting to team up are usually nowhere close to being long-time players. I'd just find myself going over the areas they did myself. Not worth it.

Okay, as I said, I've bored of pear talk, just wanted to clear up those two things that seem to come up often.

The Gods Have Gone a Bit Nuts

I've been on manu, alch, and magic gods for quite a long while. But I realized for the last one that I just didn't have it in me to keep trying to force-level magic at this time. I wanted to do other things.

So, I dropped the magic god.

Manu and Alch remain of those three. I still have a way to go before I'll drop alch. But manu... two more school days where I'm stocked for a full day of mixing and I'm done with it.

So replace magic with? Another thing I learned is that my build is finally up to a point where I can very decently handle a double frost troll spawn. Seeing as it's been an incredibly long time since I've done any a/d training, relying almost solely on dailies for levels, I decided it was time to maybe get back into that for a while.

I wanted to continue to focus on alch and manu mix-wise, so rather than get another mix god this time, I went with defense. (Attack is an enemy of Alchemy, so that wasn't an option.)

I've since used a couple Tzu days on a double frost spawn with some very nice results. Hell, I've even hit the double spawns on normal days as they're decent experience then as well.

But yeah... now my gods are: Manu, Alchemy, Defense

Next step: Due to the Alchemy god, switching gods after this will be problematic until I reach my goal in that skill. I may switch manu to magic once I hit 100 in that skill, if just temporarily until I can get into crafting (alchemy enemy) and summoning (defense enemy).

Redeemer Perks

Two new redeemer perks (so far), and with tons of harving in between, I've gotten both...

Here We Go Again... LevelMania Continues

Alchemy - Surprisingly the last level got done mostly outside of school. Doesn't mean I was never in the school though, hehe. I need two more school days for Manu so manu will get priority on future school days until it's complete.

You advanced to level 138 of alchemy!

Alchemy 138

Magic - Dropped the god, but got this beforehand. I'll continue leveling it, just without the help of the god for now. When I feel like it. I do still have a goal to get it to 100, it's just been de-prioritized.

You advanced to level 85 of magic!

Magic 85

Overall Levels - These have been coming along nicely despite how high I am. Yeah, they're painful to look at when trying to get them though... 164 occured on a School Day, 165 while I was training on Sun Tzu.

Your overall level is now 164!

Engineering - While I don't focus on it these days, I do still collect my amber when my Action Points allow for it. And I'll gather the rest of the ings to use that amber in the school.

You advanced to level 104 of engineering!

Engineering 104

Tailoring - I really need to stock up and work on this. No god to play with so I forget about it. But I have read a few books for it lately.

You advanced to level 70 of tailoring!

Tailoring 70

Harvesting - A long-forgotten skill. I do the dailies, occasionally I'll take advantage of 3x days if I happen to need something higher level (like yew for engineering), but generally I don't do anything for this skill, just harvest what I need regardless of the harv points.

You advanced to level 117 of harvesting!

Harvest 117

Manufacturing - Almost done with the god. Besides this level, I'm actually only a handful of helms from the next level as well.

You advanced to level 97 of manufacturing!

Manufacturing 97

And finally, as I said I took the Defense god just recently. So I actually am doing some training on occasion now. Still mostly leveling via dailies though.

Yup, that's it for now. No summoning, no crafting... but both of those will be attacked hard soon enough, once I'm done with my current gods.

Ooops, Burn returned, hehe

Spent 6 months away... comp died, leaving me with only a laptop that couldn't handle EL, and a lack of funds to get a better comp that I could play on. Well, that's finally dealt with!

Day 2 of my return now. It took me quite a while just to try and remember what I was doing before I left, as well as catch up on everything new. Frost trolls... haven't tried them yet but look interesting.

New perk Dedicated Harvester - at only 10kgc, no pickpoints needed, and the fact that I never harvest without a harv medallion, this was a no-brainer to immediately take.

Hello Lenny! - While trying to regain my bearings, getting used to the maps and what to wear and kicking critters and mixing and stuff, I decided to go for a stroll at night on c2 and see if I could find my favorite kitty. He died before we could play long though... :-(

Lenny Kill number 89

First Level in half a year! - Was close to a harv level, and the triple harv exp day showed up. Combined with the new Dedicated Harvester perk and a rare sitting at dung, I quickly hit it.

You advanced to level 109 of harvest!

Harvesting 109

The Potioner in Me - I finally figured out what I was doing in December the long way... I needed to stock leather, thread, and wine. Things I usually do via mule, but I noticed I was out of creature food. I decided to make creature food, only to notice I already had all the flowers to mix 3k of it. Aha, that's what I was working on!

So I mixed those, and muled up to stock up. Today, I added to that by stocking my SRs (2k) and mixing some BRs for gc since I had the ings for them (and I was close to leveling after the CF/extract mixing).

You advanced to level 110 of potion!

Potion 110

Where to go from here? Well, I'm still trying to get back into the swing of things, so focusing mostly on stocking needed supplies, by purchase or by mixing. My gods lie in alchemy, potion, and manu so I'll be looking mostly at those three skills, though I'm considering getting some levels in a few others. I would like to get all skills 50+, which would mean 3 more ranging levels and 9 more in tailoring, but at least the latter would take a while due to cost.
